Why You Should Do A Controlled Exit At Your Wedding

What is a controlled exit at a wedding?

A controlled exit at a wedding is a well-planned and executed way for wedding couples to exit the reception memorably. It’s usually accomplished with the help of guests, wedding coordinators, and the wedding photographer. The goal is to create a visually appealing and symbolic “grand finale” to the event. This is often done right after dinner to maximize the number of participants.

Common features of a controlled exit:

  • Timing: My preference as the photographer is to stage a fake exit versus an end-of-night exit.
  • Participation: The wedding couple usually likes to have everyone participate.
  • Props: Depending on the wedding, guests may way sparklers, ribbons, or bubbles.
  • Photos: It’s a great moment for me as the photographer to capture a unique and meaningful photo.
  • Logistics: Involving the DJ or emcee is a great idea for broadcasting how the exit should go.

Why people choose coordinated or controlled exits:

  • It makes for a fun, Instagram-worthy moment.
  • It signals a clear ending to the celebration. (Although doing a fake exit can be just for photos)
  • It can help with crowd control, especially if you’re trying to clear out the venue.

How is this different from a regular end-of-night exit?

Many of my wedding couples have tried to have sparkler or bubble exits. Unfortunately, by the end of the wedding day, 50–75% of guests usually leave. As a result, only a small group—typically the couple’s closest friends and family—remains for the planned exit. Couples usually have leftover bubbles and sparklers because so many people leave early. So, if you are planning a real, end-of-the-night exit, don’t buy supplies for all of your guests.
