A Yankee Trace wedding can be beautiful. This Dayton wedding venue is a good choice for golf lovers hosting a small wedding reception. Usually, wedding parties are confined to the clubhouse, practice green, and patio. Don’t anticipate being able to use a golf cart to get beautiful photos on the property. I’ve never been allowed to do this at any Yankee Trace event.
Dayton photographers will probably find that there are not an overwhelming number of backdrops, but there is enough to create gorgeous Dayton wedding photography. Luckily the front portico is beautiful, albeit small. There is a driving range and practice area to the north that provides a few trees and plenty of grass. There are very few options to create dynamic portraits, but the options they do have are decent.
Yankee Trace Golf Course is a good wedding reception location in the Dayton area. As far as golf courses go, there is limited use of green space for wedding photos, but you maybe the administration will let you go places I have not been. The front entrance makes a nice backdrop for smaller group photos, but there are few locations that can accommodate larger groups. The wedding prep area is one of the largest in Dayton, so that is a big plus.
The reception space is decently sized but not large. This is a good reception facility for small to medium weddings. I see too many wedding receptions where the tables can be too close together. It would be tempting to have a reception here while cramming in the guests. I’d consider other venues for larger weddings.

TIP: Don’t choose this Dayton golf course for large weddings.
My 225th wedding was my fifth Dayton wedding at Yankee Trace Golf Course between Miamisburg and Springboro Ohio. The couple held their ceremony at a nearby Catholic church just off Austin Boulevard and their reception in the renovated Yankee Trace event space. Having non-church weddings has been a trend for the last several years, so photographing a church wedding was a welcome change. As a bonus, I was practicing my wedding film making skills by making a surprise wedding highlight video for the coupe.
I decided before the wedding that in the small amounts of downtime I was going to have at this wedding I would make a wedding video. As things happened through the day I took still photos as well as video. I then delivered the images within the guaranteed time frame. A few days to a week later, I surprised them with a four-minute film. See it below!
Before the wedding, I met the groom and groomsmen at my favorite Dayton area wedding-getting-ready location, the Hilton Garden Inn at Austin Landing. This hotel just 15 minutes south of Dayton Ohio has the perfect size rooms for several people to get ready on a wedding day. I have been to getting ready spots over the course of 225 weddings, but I always love this Hilton Garden Inn in Miamisburg, Ohio.
Once the ceremony and formal/family photos were complete, we rushed to Yankee Trace. The sun was setting, and we had less than 20 minutes to complete the wedding portraits before dark. I created thousands of beautiful Dayton wedding portraits in hundreds of locations, so I was prepared for this night. I grabbed my wireless lights and met the bride and groom on the golf course. We knocked out 15 minutes of sunset pictures with the wedding couple nicely lit by my lights. The rest of the night went amazingly well with nearly 30 people dancing the night away at Yankee Trace. Truthfully, I am still totally in love with these photos. See the video below!
This venue is not my favorite due to the golf course restrictions. We aren’t allowed to take photos in many places near the golf course. Other venues allow full use of the course and golf carts. The other reason this venue isn’t my favorite is the lack of indoor areas to take photos. It is a beautiful venue that does a great job. I just wish the venue had more options for photography. I want to show off the reception venue like I do with the wedding venue. The ease of parking and access to I-75 is a bonus here.
Before the wedding, I met the wedding couple to capture pre-wedding photos of the bride and groom, with the groom being at a hotel and the bridge being at home. He was at my favorite Dayton area wedding-getting-ready location, Hilton Garden Inn Austin Landing. This hotel just 15 minutes south of Dayton Ohio has the perfect size rooms for several people to get ready on a wedding day. I have been to getting ready spots throughout 225 weddings, but I always love this Hilton Garden Inn at Austin Landing in Miamisburg, Ohio. The corner suite(s) is always enough room for the bride and several bridesmaids to get ready.
I wanted to write specifically about how great this Dayton groom was. First off, he was up for anything I would suggest. He trusted me to be the one to create great photos. Second, he had the best facial expressions which you can see below. Even when he didn’t know I was photographing him, he made awesome expressions. Quite often, I get grooms who have to be lightly directed into making interesting expressions. When I get a do-it-yourself groom, I can focus more on using cool backgrounds and less on directing. Either way, I love what I do!
