If you are searching for a unique Dayton wedding venue with historic character, Carillon Historical Park is one of my favorite places to photograph weddings. Located near downtown Dayton, this living history museum combines historic buildings, vintage transportation, beautiful grounds, and unique photo locations.
Carillon Historical Park gives you something you will not find at a traditional ballroom wedding venue. Your wedding photos can include historic buildings, the covered bridge, vintage vehicles, the carousel, and other parts of Dayton’s history. If you want your wedding photography to look different from the typical wedding album, Carillon Park gives you plenty of options.
Why Have Your Wedding at Carillon Historical Park?
Carillon Historical Park is the main campus of Dayton History and one of the most unique Dayton wedding venues in western Ohio. The National Historic Landmark features historic buildings, transportation exhibits, and some of the most recognizable pieces of Dayton history.
I have photographed several Carillon Historical Park weddings, and every wedding has been different. The property gives you plenty of choices for wedding portraits, family photos, and wedding party pictures.
You can take photos around the historic buildings, explore the grounds in a golf cart, visit the covered bridge, and even incorporate some of the vintage transportation exhibits when available.
If you love Dayton history and want a wedding venue with plenty of character, Carillon Historical Park is worth considering.
Eichelberger Pavilion Wedding Venue
The Eichelberger Pavilion is the newest and largest event space at Carillon Historical Park. It provides a large, modern reception space while still giving couples access to the historic buildings and grounds throughout the park.
When I first walked inside the Eichelberger Pavilion, my immediate reaction was, “Oh my gosh, this is huge!”
The two-story reception hall has an open layout that gives couples plenty of flexibility when planning the reception. There is room for different table arrangements, a dance floor, entertainment, and other wedding reception elements.
A second-floor balcony overlooks the main reception area and provides another useful space for your wedding day.
Cocktail Hour at Eichelberger Pavilion
The separate cocktail hour area is a nice feature of the Eichelberger Pavilion. Guests can enjoy cocktail hour on the balcony overlooking the reception space before entering the main reception area.
This keeps guests from entering the reception room too early and gives the staff time to finish setting up the room before dinner and the reception begin.
Wedding Preparation Suites and Getting Ready Rooms
The Eichelberger Pavilion has separate spaces for the wedding party to get ready.
The bridal suite is located upstairs and is one of the larger getting-ready rooms I have seen at a Dayton wedding venue. It includes a kitchenette, bathroom, mirrors, a dining table, and plenty of space for hair and makeup.
The room is not heavily decorated, but it provides plenty of room for the bride and bridesmaids to prepare for the wedding and enjoy some time together before the ceremony.
The groom’s room is located on the ground floor near the event office. It is smaller and more basic, with chairs, a television, and storage space. It works well for the groom and a few members of the wedding party, although larger groups may find it a little tight.
Neither room is particularly elaborate from a photography standpoint, but both provide functional spaces for getting ready.
Air Conditioning at Carillon Historical Park
The Eichelberger Pavilion has sufficient air conditioning, which is important for summer weddings.
Keep in mind that many of the historic buildings throughout Carillon Historical Park do not have air conditioning. If you are planning to take wedding photos inside the historic buildings or spend a lot of time outside during a hot summer wedding, be prepared for the heat.
This is something I would keep in mind when planning your wedding timeline and deciding how long you want to spend taking outdoor and historic-building portraits.
Carillon Historical Park Wedding Photos
One of my favorite things about photographing a wedding at Carillon Historical Park is the variety of locations available for wedding photography.
The property gives you access to historic buildings, open spaces, transportation exhibits, the covered bridge, and other unique areas throughout the park. Instead of taking every portrait in one location, we can move around the property and create a wedding gallery with a lot of variety.
Dayton History provides a golf cart and driver to help transport the wedding couple and photographer around the property. This is especially helpful because Carillon Historical Park covers a large area.
During one wedding, we traveled to several historic buildings, the Transportation Center, and the covered bridge for portraits. The golf cart allowed us to visit multiple locations without spending a large portion of the wedding day walking from one area to another.
Family Photos and Wedding Party Portraits
Carillon Historical Park also provides plenty of options for family photos and wedding party portraits.
For larger groups, I prefer using an area with enough open space to organize everyone efficiently. We can then use different parts of the park for smaller groups and couple’s portraits.
If you have family members or guests who have difficulty walking long distances, talk with the venue about golf cart transportation. The property is large, and some photo locations require more walking than others.
Carillon Park Transportation Center Wedding Photos
For more than a decade, the Carillon Park Transportation Center was one of my favorite indoor locations for wedding photography.
Located on the western side of the property near the Reynolds & Reynolds clock tower, the Transportation Center features vintage buses, train cars, and trolley cars.
I have always loved public transportation and historic vehicles, so this has been one of my favorite areas at Carillon Historical Park.
The Transportation Center is no longer used as a wedding venue because of changes to the property and the opening of the Eichelberger Pavilion. However, couples may still be able to use parts of the area for wedding portraits during regular operating hours. Check with Carillon Historical Park about current access before planning your wedding photos there.
Golf Cart Access for Wedding Photography
The golf cart provided by the pavilion can make a big difference on a wedding day.
We used it to quickly travel around Carillon Historical Park and visit several photo locations. We photographed the couple near historic buildings, visited the Transportation Center, and stopped at the covered bridge on the south side of the park.
The golf cart also helps when your wedding timeline does not leave much time for portraits. Rather than spending 10 or 15 minutes walking between locations, we can spend that time actually taking photographs.
The Covered Bridge at Carillon Historical Park
The covered bridge is one of my favorite locations for Carillon Park wedding photos.
I especially like photographing couples inside the bridge because the darker interior creates a nice contrast with the brighter opening at the north end. The wooden structure also creates a natural frame around the couple.
This is a great example of why I like photographing weddings at Carillon Historical Park. You can create portraits that look completely different from the typical wedding venue photos.
Historic Buildings and Unique Wedding Photo Locations
There are plenty of unique wedding photo locations throughout Carillon Historical Park. The property contains preserved buildings, transportation exhibits, and other pieces of Dayton’s history.
I have several favorite locations throughout the park, including a piece of the Old River pool that reminds me of my own childhood.

Carillon Historical Park Carousel Wedding Photos
The vintage carousel inside Carillon Historical Park can also be a fun location for wedding photos when it is available.
The space around the carousel is limited, so I would not plan on creating a wide photograph showing the entire attraction with a large wedding party. Close-up portraits and medium shots work much better.
It is a fun option for couples who want something different from traditional wedding portraits.
Carillon Historical Park Wedding Photography Tips
Carillon Historical Park is a large property, so keep the size of the park in mind when planning your wedding timeline.
Some of the best photo locations are not right next to the Eichelberger Pavilion. The golf cart can save time, but you should still allow enough time for transportation between locations.
If you have older guests or guests with mobility concerns, ask the venue about golf cart transportation and any associated fees or availability.
Weddings at the Eichelberger Pavilion also offer easier access from the parking area than some of the more distant historic buildings. That can make the venue more convenient for guests who prefer to minimize walking.
Overall, Carillon Historical Park is a really fun place to get married. You get a modern reception space at the Eichelberger Pavilion while still having access to the historic buildings, grounds, transportation exhibits, and unique photo locations that make Carillon Park such a recognizable part of Dayton.
