Once or twice per year I am hired to photograph a marriage proposal. My first proposal for 2024 took place on the campus of the University of Dayton. Because I worked there for 14 years, a UD marriage proposal is extra special to me.
An hour ahead of the set time, the groom-to-be shared his location with me. I was on campus watching my phone to see where he was. As he approached campus, I hid behind an evergreen tree near the library. I pretended to photograph the area in case they spotted me. I saw them walk in front of St. Mary’s Hall on a short walk around campus. After they were out of sight, I set up two video cameras to capture the proposal. I then returned to hiding.
The couple approached the gazebo behind Albert Emanuel Hall. I started photographing from the tree. They entered the gazebo and began to talk. During this time, my video cameras were capturing the entire thing. As he got down on one knee, I ran up to photograph the proposal. The bride-to-be glanced at me for a second and then took in the entire proposal. I took a ton of photos to ensure I would capture the moment. After she said “Yes!” they hugged for a few moments. After a few minutes alone, the three of us spent an hour creating true engagement photos around UD.
