Seattle Washington was the most amazing place I have visited in the last 25 years. My wife and I have been to beaches, big cities, mountains, deserts, and islands. One of our must-see spots was the iconic Pike Place Market. For me, it doesn’t get any better than Seattle Washington, and the Pacific Northwest. Five stars is not a high enough rating for this part of North America.
To start, I have to say that I love trains, boats, planes, mountains, and water. This city has all of these things in Spades. First, I love Puget Sound and Mt. Rainier, prominent features of the area. Second, are all the various train and light rail systems that traverse downtown. The third is the Washington State Ferry.
On our fourth day in the Pacific Northwest, we took the Washington State Ferry from downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island. The moment the ferry pulled away from the pier, I felt as if I was in a different world. The authentic vintage ferry was huge and beautiful. As we left the Seattle skyline and a Norwegian cruise ship in the distance, we approached Bainbridge Island. This island features a great little town, good restaurants, and local shopping. I highly recommend spending a day on the quaint island.
Pike Place Market is an interesting and eclectic public market frequented by locals and tourists. We ended up returning daily to get donuts and other snacks. As a photographer, I knew to approach the scene differently. One day I went before the market opened and got photos of an empty market. Another day I climbed several stories in a parking garage to get an aerial view.
We loved several PNW attractions. These included the Space Needle, Sky View Observatory, and Museum of Pop Culture. We also enjoyed the Seattle Monorail, REI flagship store, and the Seattle Spheres of Amazon. In just one day we logged over 40,000 steps doing just some of these fun attractions. I grew up a fan of grunge music like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Naturally, I was in love with the Museum of Pop Culture’s two exhibits on the bands. The exhibits were extra powerful because the band was formed in and around this amazing Washington city.

One thing I always do on vacation is scout portrait sites. Seattle has some of the best engagement session locations I have ever seen. I am a Dayton Ohio based travel photographer.

I love everything boat, train, and plane related. When we approached the ships below, I knew exactly what I was looking at. I recognized the dry dock as well as the U.S. Navy jet boat that was being worked on. The destroyer that was docked, in the first photo, looks so imposing head-on.

The other photos are of various sites we loved. An underrated but beautiful building downtown is the Seattle Public Library. I chose to photograph in black and white because the sky wasn’t beautiful that day. The angles on this place are outrageous.
One of the fun things I did alone was to go running in the morning. I ran from the W Hotel Seattle down to Puget Sound and then about a mile north of there. Once you pass the cruise terminal you can get right up to the water. Two of the photos below are of a very small and rocky beach just north of Pike’s Place Market.
I love Seattle so much, and I love to create incredible travel photography.
