Downtown Dayton Courthouse Square Engagement Session

Each year I get a handful of engagement session inquiries outside of my wedding inquiries. Usually, these are couples who are getting married in other states but live in the Dayton, Ohio area. In May 2023, this groom-to-be booked me to capture their engagement session. Initially, it was set for Glen Helen Nature Preserve but it was later changed to downtown Dayton. We ended up having an amazing Dayton Courthouse Square engagement session.

I always like to hear a couple’s origin story, so I was surprised to learn the engagement occurred just 24 hours prior. This made me even more excited to photograph them because they were still incredibly excited.

As usual, I asked the couple what they had in mind for their shoot. They said they really liked the old courthouse. We worked our way through Courthouse Square utilizing the various textures and architectures around. One of my favorite spots is the walkway between the square and Second Street. The north-south sidewalk takes you to the Schuster Center but provides shade from the sun. This building provides endless opportunities for engagement photos with its glass and metal facade and rounded edges. I enjoy taking a more artistic approach by blurring the background. I used my photography approach to create a fun and relaxing photo session.

Overall I would rate this one of the top 5% of the hundreds of engagement sessions I have done. It was truly a pleasure. When we finished our session atop the Arts Garage, I told the couple that I wished we had many hours together. They were enjoyable and very photogenic. Lastly, the bride-to-be knew how to pose and move herself like a real model. I couldn’t ask for a better engagement session in Dayton Ohio.
