As part of a current two-year photo project, I had the opportunity to photograph The Loft Theatre and Metropolitan Arts Center in Dayton, Ohio. In the 1980s or 1990s, this became the center of the Dayton performing arts scene. It still is today! My history with it came when it was the rehearsal space for two Muse Machines musicals I participated in during high school.
The Loft Theatre is home to Dayton’s amazing Human Race Theatre Company and it is one of Victoria Theatre Association’s world-class performing arts venues. This hidden but very well-known building is located between 2nd Street and 3rd Street on the east side of Main Street. It is connected by Victoria Theatre on the north and by Uno Pizzeria on the south. Check out my other Dayton commercial photography.
Upon entering you have to go to the second floor. There is a small lobby with a few seats and a small cocktail bar. There is a rehearsal space but that is not open to the public. Just past the bar is the theatre which is all on one level. Inside a few rows of seats are 180 degrees of the stage. The stage is round and comes within feet of the audience. You feel like you are inside the play. It is awesome and intimate. What a great place to see a small play in Dayton, Ohio.
