In October 2021 The Chicks (formerly Dixie Chicks) put on a very energetic show to a sold-out crowd at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center. October is late for an outdoor show, so everyone was in jackets which was weird but still fun. COVID-19 canceled the original show schedule for one of the hottest days of the year in July, was canceled. I was thankful because it was way too hot to be seeing an outdoor show. Emily, Marty, and Natalie played a long concert filled with their best hits. It was the best I’ve seen them out of the 5 times so far. Is was such an honor to photograph the Chicks Concert in Cincinnati 2021.

I was on assignment from Cincinnati CityBeat, one of two publications I shoot for. Each time I get a media pass or photo pass, I am thankful. No matter the show, big or small, I take a moment to realize how lucky I am to capture these amazing artists as they play for thousands of people. Certain shows such as this, carry more meaning because I have been a lifelong fan. The same goes for Dave Matthews Band and Metallica, both of which I photographed.

It is such an honor to be a concert photographer in Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus.

The Chicks In Concert At Nationwide Arena August 2023

On a Wednesday night in August 2023 I photographed the Gaslighter tour stop of The Chicks. This show took place at Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus, Ohio, one of the best arenas in Ohio. As usual with The Chicks, we had to shoot FOH (front of house/sound board) but I didn’t care. I am always thankful for every concert I photograph. I usually take 30 seconds when in position to remember how lucky I am.

We have been fans of The Chicks since their first album, so when I got the opportunity to photograph them in concert in 2022, I jumped at the chance. I was the sole photographer for the 2022 Riverbend show, an October outdoor show at that. It was fantastic but hard to photograph because I just wanted to sing along. We have seen them several times in Cincinnati, Columbus, and at the Grand Ole Opry.

The Chicks’ music is fantastic and poignant. Normally I listen to music for the overall piece of art and not for the lyrics. Most of the time I can’t understand the lyrics, so I can’t create the story in my head. For The Chicks, I know every work and the stories those words create.

Photography The Chicks is easy but somewhat frustrating. They are so energetic and fun, but shooting from the sound board doesn’t get my close enough to capture their expressions. Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled and thankful to be shooting the concert. I really love shooting from the pit the most.
