Far Way From Marcus And The Boys
I finally got to photograph Mumford and Sons! When the concert was announced by Nationwide Arena on X (Twitter), I immediately got on the list to photograph them. We had seen them twice before including their Gentlemen Of The Road tour stop in Troy, Ohio. For this show, my credentialed publication was CityBeat Cincinnati. They have been one of my go-to publications for concert photography. My other publication is CincyMusic.com.
FOH Soundboard Front Of House Shoot For Mumford And Sons
As with many of my concert photography assignments, I though I was going to be shooting from the pit. I am always prepared just in case that changes. This night, it changed to a FOH front of house / soundboard shoot. Had I not been prepared, I would have only had wide angle shots from 3/4 of the way back on the arena floor. What you see below is a mix if medium focal length and fully zoomed in shots.
Knowing how the musicians perform can dictate how I am going to shoot the show. For Marcus from the soundboard, I didn’t have many options. He spends a great deal of time standing behind the microphone, as he is the lead singer. Combine that with a stationary position at the center of the soundboard, and you get rather non-dynamic concert photos. The best photos would have been taken on stage by the Mumford and Sons tour photographer or from the pit if we had been alllowed.
Photographing Concerts And Events At Nationwide Arena
Nationwide Arena is a good place to photograph a concert. I prefer the Dayton and Cincinnati concert venues due to their willingness to guard my equipment whenever I have a ticket. Nationwide is easy to get to from home, has close cheap parking, and is a really nice arena. As photographers were are not permitted to walk to the restroom alone, so that is a bit of a “come on, man” situation. We don’t complain. We are getting to photograph a concert, sometime by ourselves. It is an honor and a privilege.
