The B-17F Memphis Belle is currently undergoing a complete restoration at the At National Museum Of The United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. The Memphis Belle has been at NMUSAF since 2005 and is set to go on display in May 2018! Today the Memphis Belle received her rear turret for the final time. We were invited to watch as three restoration artists connected the rear turret to the rest of the plane. The Memphis Belle rear turret installation was a huge milestone in this historic aircraft’s comeback.
Being in the restoration hangar for the Memphis Belle turret installation was awesome! Originally, I saw the Belle years ago when it first arrived at the museum. During a “friends and family” event in the restoration hanger, I had access to the Belle. That night the Belle was in pieces. I was able to crawl inside and make my way through the tattered aircraft. I didn’t take many photos at that time. One day I hope to get access to photograph in this hangar again. Some of the visuals can be very fun to create. Lastly, thanks to the Air Force Museum for having me out and allowing me aerial access.
I am for hire as an aviation photographer.
