A concert photographer’s rite of passage is to photograph the rock and roll band, KISS. Recently, I got my chance thanks to one of two great Cincinnati publications that I shoot for. This concert was at Wright State University’s E.J. Nutter Center in Dayton Ohio. This was the first and only time I’d photograph a KISS concert at Dayton’s Nutter Center.
For the first song, we were doing a FOH or soundboard shoot. This is because these rock icons come down from the ceiling on platforms with sparks and fire. It would have been unsafe for us to be in the pit. What a crazy spectacle these guys put on.
For the remaining two songs were could shoot from the pit. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, in their usual way, played directly to the camera. This provided me with some classic KISS shots, hair and makeup and all. Whether up close or far away, this band wows the crowd every night.
I try to take a moment at each concert to remember where I got my start in 2015, Rose Music Center.
