Since 2007 I have offered wedding photography as my only option. In 2021, I began to also offer wedding videography. I found myself with various down times at weddings and spare equipment. As a surprise for couples, I began delivering a short wedding film with my favorite moments of the day. Eventually, I made this and offering in my 8-hour wedding package and my 12-hour wedding package. Photography and video are something I do at nearly every session, regardless of type.
I take two approaches to my wedding videography. Using traditional mirrorless cameras and professional lenses is a requirement for photography. However, I work alone, so I can only take photos with one at a time. For important parts of the day such as the ceremony, my second camera is capturing video.
I use a combination of action cameras and vlogging cameras to capture wide angle and up close video throughout the day. Often, the action camera is capturing a 4k safety shot of the ceremony, reception, or speeches. The footage that I can from this camera shows the entire room and can capture events that happen across the space.
The vlogging camera is set on the head table in front of the wedding couple. This captures their reactions to speeches, both laughter and crying. I love this angle because I don’t have to block anyone’s view of the couple. The camera takes up very little space and often isn’t even noticeable. It is perfect for the reaction shots that make the wedding film great.
I will have the action camera and vlogging cameras capturing angles I cannot get. During non-ceremony times, I will use my backup camera and lens to capture more photos video. Because of the quality of cameras I own, I can easily switch between photo and video within seconds. So, for the first look, I can shoot several photos and instantly switch to capturing video.
Basically, I have the ability to use two cameras for photos and four for video. I immediately assess what the situation calls for and put the appropriate camera to work. There are professional video teams that bring pro-level video equipment, sound operators, and giant over the head stabilizers. I am not that person. My intention is to be professional and discreet.
Since I have photographed more Thant 250 weddings, I am very good at anticipating everything on a wedding day. That is half of what makes me good at what I do. The other half is knowing my gear. Combing my gear knowledge with anticipation of every moment makes capturing photo and video incredibly rewarding. I get home from weddings and marvel all all the beautiful footage and images I captured.
Currently, I do all the post production for photo and video. Learning video editing has been incredibly frustrating and rewarding. It is so much more complex than editing photos, but the end result is worth it. I am not an amazing wedding videographer like John Bunn. If you are looking for someone who can capture amazing wedding day moments in a way you can relive forever, I can do that.
