One of my personal photography projects is to photograph empty venues, especially empty theaters. My white whale was the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. If you’re planning a trip to Hollywood, the Dolby Theatre is an absolute must-see. Situated in the ultra-touristy and iconic Hollywood & Highland complex, this concert and award-show venue is where the magic of the movies meets real life. Best known as the longtime home of the Academy Awards, the Dolby Theatre offers visitors a chance to walk the same red carpet as the stars—and trust me, it’s every bit as glamorous as you’d imagine. I was in awe for the entire tour!
From the outside, the building is grand yet inviting, with wide steps leading up past columns inscribed with the names of past Oscar Best Picture winners. It’s easy to picture A-list celebrities in their designer gowns and tuxedos making their way up the same path under a sea of flashing cameras. Just being there gives you a little taste of Hollywood royalty. The odd thing is that stores line the easy and west sides of the staircase – something you never see on The Oscars broadcast.
Once inside, the large scale becomes apparent. The 3,400-seat venue is elegant and high-tech, with rich red and gold tones, beautiful architectural details, and a massive stage. Designed with both luxury and performance in mind, the Dolby Theatre isn’t just for film premieres and awards shows. It also hosts top-notch concerts, Broadway shows, and live television events. Prince, Adele, and Celine Dion have performed here, and touring shows like Hamilton have brought Broadway to L.A. On the day I visited, the stage was empty. Shortly after I left, the theater was closed for Oscars preparation.
Whether you’re into film, live shows, or Hollywood vibes, the Dolby Theatre delivers. It combines history, glamour, and entertainment in one stop. Standing under the same archways as Oscar winners, you can’t help but feel the magic of Hollywood all around you. So, get your camera ready, wear your best red-carpet smile, and prepare to be dazzled! Enjoy your time at this great Hollywood tourist attraction.
This was an incredibly informative tour and the only tour I’ve been on that focused on a single event, The Oscars. If you’re interested in the behind-the-scenes experience, guided tours of the Dolby Theatre are available daily. These tours are a highlight for film lovers, giving you access to the auditorium, VIP areas, and even a peek backstage. During my visit, nothing was off limits – my favorite! You’ll learn fun facts about how the Oscars are set up, what the stars see behind the curtain, and how the theatre transforms for television.
Don’t forget to explore the surrounding area before or after your visit. The Dolby Theatre is part of a entertainment complex that includes stores, restaurants, and the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame just outside. You can grab a bite to eat with a view of the Hollywood Sign, or pick up a souvenir to remember your brush with Tinseltown history. Beware of pickpockets and tourist scams. They exist in this area.
