I have been to Oakes Quarry Park several times for engagement photos. For these Spring engagement pictures, the couple chose this somewhat odd Dayton area park. Normally a park is filled with grass, trees, creeks, and flowers. This park looks like the surface of the moon lightly littered with bushes. In its own way, it is very beautiful.
The hard rock ground that forms the base of this park provides a great starting point for photos. Since I have been here before, I tried to find interesting spots I have never shot. We found some elevated boulders where I could put one of my clients higher than the other. We also used several spots for seated poses. This was a treat for me as I can’t always do this at parks.
Connecting with my clients is key to a fun photo shoot for them and for me. I often discuss jobs, schooling, and politics with my clients. Just kidding about politics! Discussing music and pop culture is a great way for me to get my clients to open up. I try to relate my own stories to theirs. Clients who are comfortable make the best photography subjects. These spring engagement pictures show authentic smiles I was able to bring out because my clients were comfortable.
In general, I am very anti-graffiti. However, the graffiti at this park on a giant rock quarry face is actually kind of fitting. It reminds me of something that would have been in the “Romeo and Juliet” movie from the 1990s.
