Hawthorne Hill was the Oakwood Ohio home of Orville Wright. Oakwood is a beautiful suburb of Dayton Ohio, just south of the City of Dayton limits. This mansion is a large, beautiful, White House-like home set atop a grand hill with 4 acres of land. This property is currently managed by Dayton History, Dayton’s historic property organization which also manages Carillon Historical Park.

I have wanted to photograph this historic Dayton mansion for years, and I finally did it in March 2021, at least the exterior. I want to work with them in the next few years to photograph the interior of one of Dayton’s most important and iconic mansions. This is in a gorgeous neighborhood with thousands of vehicles driving by only a few streets over. I am sure most people don’t even know about one of Gem City’s best-kept secrets. I enjoy being a Dayton commercial photographer and documenting pieces of our shared history.

Hawthorne Hill, an iconic landmark, holds significant historical value for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs.

At Hawthorne Hill, visitors can step back in time in the fascinating world of the Wright Brothers. This magnificent mansion served as a home and workspace for Orville after Wilbur had past. They were a pioneering duo during their groundbreaking experiments and the development of the world’s first successful airplane.
This estate treats visitors to its timeless charm and architectural grandeur. Explore the preserved interiors, adorned with artwork, furnishings, and artifacts belonging to the Orville Wright (and family).

Stroll through the grounds, where Orville and sister Catherine found peace and quiet, and gain a deeper understanding of Orville’s relentless dedication to flight.

Whether you are a history enthusiast craving a glimpse into the lives of these aviation pioneers or simply an admirer of timeless architecture, Hawthorne Hill offers an unforgettable experience. Immerse yourself in the incredible journey of the Wright Brothers and discover the indelible mark they left on the world of aviation.
In April 2026, Dayton History offered a paid tour of Hawthorne Hill. The tour allowed visitors to see the entire how. On the first floor were all the shared living spaces including a formal dining room and the kitchen. Upstairs there were several bedrooms that Orville, Catherine (his sister), and Bishop Wright (their father) lived in. The basement featured the original boiler heater complete with a coal chute and coal room. Orville would have coal delivered to heat the home.
Two technological innovations were present that I hadn’t seen in other historic home. There was a buzzer system for the residents to ring for the servants that were at the house. The other cool gadget was a whole-home vacuum system located in the basement. Instead of having a portable vacuum, the servants could hook up a hose to the wall outlet.
This was a great tour with multiple volunteers on hand to teach about each room. I really recommend taking this Dayton history tour next time it is offered.
