A few years ago, I decided I wanted to try to see all the great musicians, bands, and singers, before they stopped touring forever. I’ve been lucky enough to see Ozzy Osborne, KISS, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, and many others over the years. This is all in addition to my concert photography career, where I photograph some of the biggest names in music. So when I saw AC/DC was stopping in Detroit, Michigan for a sold-out concert. I decided I would go watch them perform on a weekday night. AC/DC was performing a sold out show at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. It’s where the Detroit Lions NFL team plays.
So I drove about 2 1/2 hours north from home and got there plenty early. When I arrived in Detroit, I went to the Detroit Metro Airport, and did some plane spotting because I’m an avid aviation photographer. So after that, I had dinner and then made my way into downtown, where I parked right around the corner from Ford Field.
I went into the concert fully expecting a decent show since the band is quite a bit older now than they were in the past, which is obvious, but the show turned out to be absolutely fantastic. The lead singer, Brian Johnson, was decent, considering how old he is, and how many shows he’s performed over the years. His singing voice is extremely unique as you know and has got to take a toll on his vocal cords. So to be able to still sing at his age is quite amazing.
I was mainly interested in hearing their hits and hearing Angus Young’s guitar playing live. That absolutely blew me away and was the best guitar performance I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen amazing guitar players and singers. I’ve seen terrible acts. I mean, I’ve seen it all. Angus’s guitar playing beat everyone else’s I’ve ever seen. He knew exactly how to get the crowd going. He did his signature walk on stage that he does with one leg. It was a little jarring seeing him with the fully gray hair, but hey, you’re old, they’re doing great, who cares. I love seeing older people, the older acts get out there and really try because they’re giving it their best at their age. Some people their age can’t even get off the couch without help, so see the band get up and perform a two hour show, it’s quite remarkable.
As far as Ford Field goes, I didn’t love it. It felt like it was dated. The concourses were rather small, considering that it’s a relatively newer stadium. I much prefer the newer larger venues, such as Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis, where they have large concourses and plenty of places to hang out if you’re not going to watch the game or watch the show. It’s always nice to have a little space where you can hang out with your friends before the show. I felt like Ford Field was just put there for football and not much attention has been given to it in terms of aesthetics or fan enhancements. But it was still nice. It was indoor. We didn’t have to worry about the weather, and the concert was amazing.
I prepaid for parking at a church nearby. I’ve been burned by prepaid parking before, but I decided to try again. When I showed up to the lot, there were only three spots left. Getting there early secured by spot, thankfully. The lot worker was taking money from people who had no prepaid for parking. That is not cool. If I prepay for parking, there should be a reserved spot for me. So, be careful and get there early.
In the last couple years, I saw the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Barry Manilow, and AC/DC. Out of all of those, Ellen John blew me away the most because he played for about three hours and it was just amazing. But the single best performance I’ve seen is Angus Young, by far, he was absolutely outstanding, very enjoyable, and that could just be because I enjoy his music AC/DC music more than I enjoy Elton John, but it was still great.
